About Gunawan

Gunawan was born in Indonesia and identified a passion for cooking and food innovation early in his career. In 2013 he migrated to Australia to study the Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management (Pâtisserie) at Le Cordon Bleu in Adelaide. During his studies, Gunawan undertook a work placement at Burch and Purchese Sweet Studio, which influenced his future direction to create magical and innovative sweets. Throughout his studies Gunawan gained experience and guidance from many great chefs including Simon Bryant, Cheong Liew, Darren Purchase, Tony Carrol, Mauro Gulli and Marco Pierre White.

Since graduating, Gunawan has worked as a Pastry Chef at some of Adelaide's favourite restaurants including Andre's Cucina, Hill of Grace, Mayfair and Jolley's Boathouse. During this time, he focused on mastering different cuisines and techniques. With a passion for education, Gunawan also began working as a Pastry Chef Instructor both locally and internationally and joined the Australian Culinary Federation as an accredited judge.

In 2016 Gunawan won a People's Choice Award at the international Savour Patissier of the Year competition and received the honour of his recipe featuring on cover of the competition recipe book.

Gunawan accepted the position of Head Chef at 2nd & 6th restaurant in 2018 and has been creating innovative and mouth-watering dishes with his team ever since. The restaurant is based upon the concept of two of the 7 Deadly Sins - Greed and Gluttony, with indulgence and temptation the inspiration for many of his dishes. The Garden of Eden and Forbidden Tree are two of his signature desserts at 2nd & 6th which feature Flowerdale Farm ingredients. "Flowerdale Farm edible flowers and micro herbs bring my dessert garden and tree alive", says Gunawan.
