About Simon Ward
As executive chef and co-owner of Hammer & Tong in Fitzroy, Simon Ward is part of a new breed of modern chefs doing it all. Opened in 2013, Hammer & Tong is a partnership between Ward and former Jacques Reymond sommelier Dennis Ferreira. The 60 seat café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is “about taking casual dining and doing it exceptionally well” says Ward. “The food is fresh, simple and generous”.
Ward started his career at the Melbourne Club in 2004 where he trained under Fitz Roth. From here Ward moved to a coveted position at one of Australia’s best restaurants, Vue de Monde. Over the next three years he gained unparalleled experience under Shannon Bennet, before moving to Dukes Coffee Roasters.
At Hammer & Tong, Ward is responsible for the diverse menu, drawing on his years of high-end and café experience, and still maintains plenty of time in the kitchen. Hammer & Tong was awarded Breakfast Spot of the Year in The Age Good Food Guide Awards 2014, and is quickly redefining all-day dining and reinvigorating the café style experience.
