Flowerdale Sprout Farm is Australia’s longest serving wholesale sprout farming business. Catherine and Charles Rattray began the business in 1983 as the first growers in Australia to commercially wholesale Alfalfa sprouts. Now entering their 31st year, they continue their commitment as suppliers of the finest fresh hydroponic products, specialising in snow pea shoots, popcorn shoots, alfalfa, lentils & gourmet mixes.
Holding positions on many industry regulatory bodies, Catherine and Charles are passionate about quality and safety. They still head the company today, with their son James who holds the position of general manager of the wholesale division. The family farm, located on the edge of the pristine Yarra Valley in Victoria, remains the company’s primary site for the production of sprouts. Today Flowerdale Farm is national brand recognised for market leading innovation and high quality standards.

John Pahl and Bev Schawalder began hydroponically growing fresh herbs on a small hobby farm in Victoria over 10 years ago. "We thought it was going to be a hobby, but it grew into a full-time business" says John. Starting out with a single hothouse, the business has grown to now have 13 hothouses covering about 1.2ha of their 16ha property, a cool room, packing house and store room. They have also recently started about 2ha of outside plantings. “We now wholesale an average of 500-600 crates a week in summer and 300 crates in winter” says John.
The herbs are all picked by hand with Bev saying it’s a labour intensive crop. The couple manage the business which now employs six full-time staff and a team of pickers who work part-time every week. Because the herbs are farmed hydroponically John and Bev can recycle their water and minimise pests whilst also being able to produce their product all year round.
James and Lindsay Boyd are Australia’s largest commercial suppliers of quality native finger limes. The finger lime is an Australian native member of the citrus family that is found in the wet sclerophyll forests abutting sub-tropical rainforests of northern New South Wales and south-eastern Queensland.
Their network of orchards and nurseries ensures they provide consistent supply of premium varieties of fresh finger limes in addition to punnets of frozen finger lime pulp.
The Boyd family have been a pioneering force of the finger lime industry, investing an intense ten year research and development program into establishing proprietary varieties of the unique fruit. In 2011 they were awarded the Fruit Logistica innovation award - the world’s most prestigious award in the fruit and vegetable industry.
